Enlarged pores

Enlarged pores, also known as visible or open pores, are a common skin concern characterised by larger-than-normal pores on the skin’s surface. Pores are tiny openings in the skin that house hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which produce oil (sebum) to lubricate and protect the skin. Enlarged pores are more noticeable on areas of the face that tend to be oilier, such as the nose, forehead, and cheeks.

Who tends to be affected by enlarged pores?

Enlarged pores can be seen in all ages and in all ethnic groups. Certain ethnic groups may have larger pores, particularly of African and Indian ancestry. Pores often appear larger with age. There are conflicting data on whether men or women are more prone to large pores. In women, the pore size may fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, with the largest pore size occuring during
ovulation.

Causes of Enlarged Pores

Genetics

Some individuals naturally have larger pores due to genetic predispositions.

Excessive Oil Production

When the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, it can mix with dead skin cells and other debris, leading to clogged pores an enlargement.

Age

As people age, the skin loses elasticity and firmness, causing pores to appear larger.

Sun Damage

Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, making pores appear larger.

Poor skincare habits

Failure to regularly cleanse the skin can result in the accumulation of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, leading to enlarged pores.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, can influence oil production and pore.

Medications /Treatments

Certain drugs or therapies may cause skin pigmentation changes as side effects.

For treatment of enlarged pores, microneedling will stimulate collagen production in the skin which helps the skin to become firmer, it can tighten around the pores, making them appear firmer. Microneedling will also help to regenerate new skin cells and smooth out the texture of the skin, further reducing the appearance of enlarged pores.
