Sun-damaged skin

Sun-damaged skin refers to the changes that occur in the skin because of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to various visible and invisible changes, in the skin’s appearance and texture.

Sunburn

Acute exposure to UV radiation can cause sunburn, which is characterised by redness, pain, swelling, and sometimes blistering of the skin.

Sunspots

Also known as age spots or liver spots, these are areas of hyperpigmentation that develop on sunexposed areas of the skin, such as the face, hands, arms, and chest.

Wrinkles and fine lines

Chronic sun exposure can accelerate the aging process of the skin, leading to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and leathery texture.

Dryness and roughness

Sun-damaged skin may become dry, rough, and uneven in texture due to depletion of moisture and damage to the skin’s protective barrier.

Uneven pigmentation

In addition to sunspots, sundamaged skin may also exhibit uneven pigmentation, including blotchiness, freckles, and melasma (patchy brown discolouration).

Loss of elasticity

UV radiation can break down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, leading to loss of elasticity and firmness, which contributes to sagging and laxity.

Actinic keratosis

These are rough, scaly patches that develop on sun-exposed areas and are considered precancerous lesions. They have the potential to progress to skin cancer if left untreated.

Sun damage can lead to a decrease in collagen production, resulting in  in the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity. Microneedling stimulates the production of new collagen, helping to improve skin firmness, elasticity, and texture. It will also help to treat any pigmentation caused by sun damage by reducing the appearance of dark spots on the skin. Overall, microneedling will help to smooth rough, uneven skin texture caused by sun damage, resulting in softer, more radiant skin.
